The Dreaded Job Hunt

There’s not much worse than the dreaded job hunt. Most people look at this as a long drawn out process, and they’re right. Statistics prove that 75% of people who decide to leave their job is because of their boss, not money, or advancement opportunities. That’s quite alarming, especially considering the costs for companies to replace staff, provide for training, and prepare paperwork for the administration costs. And don’t forget that if you were working for the right boss then all this wouldn’t matter. I can vouch for this stat, I have had mostly pathetic bosses, not leaders or mentors, mostly users and abusers.

The only worse situation to find yourself in is if your not currently working and looking for employment, what a long tedious road ahead. The constant challenge of research and sending your resume out into the black hole of the Internet application process can be frustrating. Your resume usually is coming with 1000 other applicants for one job, how depressing. On line workboards have not worked for me. They are too impersonal and provide no method of follow up or feeling like you have accomplished anything. They are programmed to accept, acknowledge and then do nothing. Just try to get a response or an answer regarding your resume can be brutal, a total black hole going nowhere.

So lets talk about some positive ideas to assist you in the job market. Here’s a helpful tip sheet on how to improve your job search.I have found that a good working network is very beneficial. Most job openings are not published outside of the company looking to hire someone, a confusing fact, especially if there are no qualified internal candidates within the company. You must consistently talk to people, let them know your out there looking for a job, talk and meet with your network frequently. Jobs are posted through Human Resources weekly, things can change at a company fast, you have to be connected and keep yourself fresh in the minds of your network.

Freshen up your resume. This too can be an introduction to who you are. Make your resume stand out, it will have to when competing with thousands of others trying to secure the same job as you are. Do something new, write about your accomplishments, not duties, and make it compelling. The most important thing to keep in mind is, would you hire you? Attack this like you are hiring for the position, what would you look for, what would grab your attention? That’s what you must focus on and strive for. Action oriented people get results, make a decision and act on it with passion. Right now the job you have is to find a new job, get going. Good Luck!
